Healthy Pets chief executive Mark Effenberg has defended the pet insurance industry in a Radio 5 Live debate.
The show followed a report in Consumers' Association publication Which?
The report told readers: "Pet insurance certainly gives you peace of mind - but policies are expensive and once you've made a claim premiums can rise."
It detailed pet owners' experiences, pointing out where errors could be made in choosing the most suitable policy.
Effenberg questioned some of the figures in the report, arguing that for about £10 a month for an average premium and a pet's broken leg costing from £1,000 to £1,500, owners should choose insurance rather than save to pay vets' bills themselves.
