Deloitte has estimated that Tuesday's pleural plaque test case ruling will save the insurance industry millions of pounds.

The consultancy company said Mr Justice Howard's ruling in the case would put a limit on claim pay-outs.

Deloitte's said future payouts would be reduced from £1.4bn to £650m.

Prior to Tuesday's ruling, the average pleural plaques claim was around £11,000. It has now been restricted to £5,000.

The court ruling also requires future claimants to meet more stringent conditions in order to be eligible to receive compensation, Deloitte's said. Consequently the number of future pleural plaque claims could decline.
