The Competition Commission has unveiled measures to stamp out mis-selling of extended warranties on domestic appliances.

Under the new rules retailers will need to give consumers information on the price and duration of warranties, as well as information about the insurance provider.

However the Consumers' Association hit-out at the plans, which it said were watered down.

The inquiry was launched after the Office of Fair Trading uncovered evidence of misselling in the £800m extended warranty market.

It dropped plans to unbundle warranties, which would have forced retailers to offer elements of cover separately, such as breakdown cover and repairs.

The Consumers' Association criticised the commission's decision to allow warranty providers to regulation themselves.
