The many golf fans in the insurance industry will be disappointed that this year's Ryder Cup at the Belfry has been postponed until 2002, following the attacks in the US.

But the postponement brings with it an insurance conundrum – is it part of the original insurable event or is it a separate event and therefore not covered? Insurers may well argue that, while putting the event back a year is understandable in the circumstances, the gesture should be at the expense of the organisers of the Ryder Cup, not their insurers.
