Axis stock went on sale at $22 (£13.22) a share in New York in the specialty lines insurer's IPO.
John Charman's Bermuda-based outfit sold 15% of its equity, raising $473m (£284m) in the offering.
Back in London, Hardy is to increase underwriting capacity on Syndicate 382 to £115m for next year, up from this year's £100m.
As Hardy owns 80% of the syndicate's capacity, it brings the group's underwriting capacity to £92.5m from £80.4m this year.
Originally a marine specialist, Syndicate 382 branched out to become a composite business with a particular interest in helicopter cover.
