The first major conference for industry leaders - Strategy 2002 - opened this morning with a rallying call for the industry to become more effective and efficient.
Chair of the event, BBC journalist John Humphrys, told delegates that for a modern society to function it needs a world class insurance industry.
He said: "No free market can exist without an efficient and effective insurance industry. But after the year we have just faced this is now under threat."
Insurance Times editor Andy Cook revealed to delegates the findings of an exclusive Mori poll, which showed there is an untapped market in the personal lines sector.
