While checking some documents recently I happened to notice that there is an (a) after the heading, "Certificate of Employers' Liability", on the certificate.

This appears on nearly all employers' liability certificates that I looked at, except Norwich Union's motor trade policy and some of NIG's policies.

A colleague didn't know why it was there. Neither did senior underwriters. After speaking to one underwriter, it appears that some of certificates don't have all the required legal information on them.

The best explanation we could come up with is that it is to do with the amendment to the Act in 1998?

Can anyone shed any light on this? .
