How the mighty have fallen. An ex-Independent staff member contacted us this week after spotting a vintage Bentley outside a job centre in Kent.

It seems the driver of the car had popped out to sign on.

And the driver's name - well let's just say he was a senior Indie director.

Also this week, Backchat was told by a fellow hack that Michael Bright has become a Kentish lad again.

He is back enjoying Smarden Time again and is said to be "happily retired".

He is rumoured to be back in Blighty - after a long break in Spain - to help the Serious Fraud Office with its inquiries.

But he is also trying to sort out the sale of his house and flat in Wapping.

Sadly no buyer is biting. Any takers for a converted oasthouse with pool?
