Government plans discussions with FSA and ABI

Tory MP Philip Hollobone has branded the European Court of Justice’s decision to ban gender-based underwriting a blow to common sense, the BBC reports.

The ECJ ruled on 1 March that insurers must stop charging women lower car insurance premiums than men on the grounds that it breaches sex discrimination rules.

Hollobone said in the House of Commons yesterday that the ruling was “another example of an unaccountable European institution striking a blow against good old-fashioned common sense.”

He added: "We all know that women drivers are better than men."

Leader of the House Sir George Young agreed the ruling was disappointing, telling MPs that the government was planning to discuss the matter with the Financial Services Authority and Association of British Insurers “to minimise the disruption to British consumers, both men and women.”
