Duggan was formerly Barclays chief retail officer, new markets. He has also been Barclays managing director, insurance and investments.

He will take over from interim chief executive and Paymentshield chief executive Tim Johnson, who was filling in for former Broker Network managing director Nick Houghton.

Duggan will take up his new role today.

Towergate Group chief executive Mark Hodges said: “There is an abundance of opportunity within network division to capitalise on the collective clout of 700 independent brokers. I feel certain that Gary will quickly establish his role in representing the membership and in maintaining and indeed improving upon our leadership position as the UK’s largest network.”

Duggan said: “The Broker Network and Countrywide brands represent a real cornerstone of UK independent broking and I am delighted to be given this exciting opportunity. I look forward to spending time with both members and partner insurers to quickly understand the benefits, challenges and future opportunities associated with a much-admired proposition.”
