Direct insurer Club Direct is offering two Discovery travel insurance policies for backpackers and long-term travellers.
The policies are available for any trip up to one year outside the UK and extensions can be made for journeys taking longer than 12 months. Four geographical versions of the policies are available: Worldwide; worldwide except US and Canada; Europe, Australia and New Zealand; or Europe only.
The standard policy is Discovery Gold, but an economy version, Discovery Silver, includes medical and other more important areas, but is aimed at those for whom baggage is not a high priority.
Policies include cover for work abroad as well as sports and activities that may be undertaken while away, such as trekking, scuba diving, bungee jumping and white-water rafting.
There is a £10m allowance for medical and emergency assistance with full repatriation and air ambulance support. Also provided is a 24-hour, multilingual, medical assistance hotline, which can be accessed anywhere in the world.
Other areas included are personal liability (£2m), legal expenses (£25,000), emergency dental treatment (£350), personal accident (£15,000), death benefit (£3,000), curtailment (£1,000) and cancellation (£1,000).
Policyholders can receive up to £20 a day for time spent in hospital abroad.
If the trip is cut short, the relevant portion of the premium can be refunded.
