A category 1 typhoon is expected to graze Japan today.

According to risk modelling firm EQECAT, Typhoon Ma-on is likely to make landfall on the island of Shikoku and brush the southeast coast of the island of Honshu.

According to EQECAT, the typhoos is likely to affect the sparsely populated prefectures of Kochi-ken, Tokushima-ken and Wakayama-ken. the company expects insured losses to be less than $250m.

At 21.00 yesterday, Ma-on had maximum sustained winds of 75 knots with typhoon force winds extending between 40 and 45 miles outwards from the centre of the storm. It is expected to sustain current speeds before landfall, but weaken to a tropical storm after brushing Japan.
