The new law designed to drive uninsured motorists off the road comes into force today.

Warning letters will be sent from today to registered keepers identified as possessing an uninsured vehicle.

Under Continuous Insurance Enforcement, it has become an offence to be the registered keeper of an uninsured vehicle and not just drive one. Registered keepers will only be able to leave their vehicle uninsured if they have a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) certificate for it.

BIBA head of corporate affairs Graeme Trudgill welcomed the new law. He said: “he enforcement of the new law is a bold move to tackle uninsured driving and will make the roads safer. Anyone receiving this new letter should check the Motor Insurance Database at www.askMID.com and speak to their insurance provider to see if their vehicle is recorded correctly on the database. If insurance is required they can contact the BIBA Find a Broker service at www.biba.org.uk or 0870 950 1790.

“BIBA is delighted to have been involved in this important change to motor insurance law, this is a big step forward for the industry and for road safety.”
