XL Re chief Henry Keeling has said the company is looking to expand its presence in the Far East.

Keeling explained that the company is keen to build on its existing operations in Australia and the Far East. The operations already include Le Monde Re Singapore.

XL Re is keen to widen its profile in the Far East, which Keeling described as a significant market for the company.

He said that when the insurance and reinsurance industries established themselves in the area, the region's economy was growing faster than other parts of the world.

However, he said: "It has not really matched expectations. Although the guys there have done very well."

XL Re is now turning its attention to China and India. He added: "From a personal perspective I think there are more opportunities in India than China. It's more attuned to our western attitudes.

"The Indian market is very interesting because it has a very large potential market-place in the prosperous middle class," he said."
