McChesney steps up as McCauley heads to rival Tesco

Gareth McChesney, Zurich UK

Zurich has appointed Gareth McChesney as its new director of personal lines underwriting and pricing for UK general insurance business.

McChesney, who starts in the post on 1 July, replaces Darren McCauley, who leaves on 28 June to become chief underwriting officer at Tesco Underwriting. McChesney joined Zurich in April as interim head of personal lines pricing for a three-month handover period.

He spent the previous 27 years working for Allianz, most recently holding responsibility for pricing and underwriting across its home and motor business.

Zurich UK chief underwriting officer Tim Holliday said: “Gareth brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this role and his focus will be on supporting Zurich’s clearly defined strategy to grow its personal lines business.

“We will be sorry to see Darren go, but he’s leaving to pursue a great opportunity and we wish him well in his future career. Darren has successfully driven our personal lines pricing strategy and leaves it in a really strong position for Gareth to carry on his great work.”

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.
