History: Initially founded in 1986 as EXEL by 68 corporations, XL Capital has grown beyond its early insurance foundations.
In the past decade, XL Capital has acquired several companies, including Winterthur International Insurance, NAC Re Corporation, ECS, Mid Ocean Reinsurance and Intercargo.

Biography: O'Hara began his career in 1970 in San Fransisco with the Royal Insurance Company and Employers' Reinsurance Company.
In 1975 he joined General Reinsurance Corp and in 1978 became responsible for the newly developing captive reinsurance underwriting.
From 1979 to 1986, O'Hara was director, senior vice president and chief underwriting officer of reinsurer Trewnick Group. As a founding member of the Trenwick Group he opened up
its offices in Bermuda..
He was the first president of the Bermuda Independent Underwriters' Association.
He has served in various positions in the XL Capital Group since joining XL Insurance in 1986. He is now president and chief executive officer of XL Capital.
