Michael Bright is on two of the most prestigious who's who lists in the UK.

He appeared at the weekend in The Sunday Times's annual Rich List at equal 562th place, with a personal fortune of £60m. He was up from 747th place and £40m last year.

However, his published entry was finalised before last week's events, and wrongly called Bright chief executive of Independent Insurance.

It also described the 56-year-old as a Manchester United fanatic, with a box at Old Trafford, and a workaholic who is in the office from 7am every day.

Debrett's People of Today 2000 reported Bright was group assistant general manager at Orion Insurance Company from 1967 to 1982, then director and general manager of Lombard Elizabethan Insurance until 1987.

Bright founded Independent Insurance Company in 1987. He was chief executive from the start and became chairman in 1991.

He was still heading up Independent Insurance Group plc, when it was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1993.

Bright is a member of Lloyd's, the Worshipful Company of Insurers and the Chartered Insurance Institute.
