AA Insurance Services has told young drivers that not claiming in their first year of driving could save them hundreds of pounds.
The company said that avoiding an accident in the first twelve months could almost halve a driver's premium.
For example, a 17-year-old girl's premium for driving a Peugeot 206 would drop from £2,700 to £1,400 after a year if she made no claims. A boy's premium in the same situation would drop from £4,200 to £2,300.
Premiums are so high because young drivers are six times more likely to have an accident in their first year of motoring than at any other point in their driving lives.
Managing director Andrew Briscoe commented: "Young drivers' premiums are high because they are a huge potential risk to insurers. Due to their inexperience, young motorists are involved in one in every four car accidents, despite representing only one in every six drivers.
"It is crucial for them to drive carefully. Not only will they become wiser drivers, but by building up their no-claims discount they can save hundreds of pounds," he added.
