Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council's campaign to weed out bogus personal injury compensation claims should become a model for councils throughout the country, according to the ABI.
The council's crackdown on fraudsters who make bogus or inflated claims for injuries allegedly sustained when falling over broken pavements has saved Knowsley Council in the region of £1.8m during the last year.
During a visit to Knowsley on 8 February 2006, Justin Jacobs, the ABI's head of liability Insurance, said: “Knowsley's crackdown is an example to other councils facing similar problems. The Council is sending out a clear message that it is not a soft touch for cheats."
Norman Keats, Knowsley Council cabinet member, said: “Our consistent efforts to crack down on fraud have resulted in successful prosecutions and a significant increase in the number of tripping claims successfully defended. Being tough sends a strong message; that those who attempt to defraud the council will be caught and punished.
“Where we are at fault we have no problem paying compensation, but we are committed to eradicating fraud.”
“We support the ABI's proposals to reform the compensation system, making it faster, simpler and more cost-effective and ensuring that honest claimants are paid quickly.”
