Security fears over mothballed construction sites, survey reveals industry decline

Allianz is warning construction bosses not to neglect mothballed sites, following a number of thefts and arson attacks.

The warning also comes as a survey, from CIPS/Markit Construction, revealed that the British building industry suffered its 22nd successive monthly fall in activity in December.

Stefan Bramwell, underwriting manager, Allianz Engineering, said: "Figures show that construction industry continues to struggle against the effects of the recession. From an insurance perspective, the downturn has lead to an increase in the amount of mothballed sites and construction firms need to be aware of the increased risk that unoccupied sites pose and ensure that adequate security measures are in place. In recent months, there have been a number of arson related incidents on construction sites and many insurers have also seen a rise in the theft of contract materials.

"On a more positive note, the report does show that house building is on the rise which, along with an increase in public sector spending, offers a more positive outlook for 2010."
