The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) confirmed this week that it was developing a new professional indemnity (PI) scheme for accredited asbestos inspectors.

The scheme, which is being developed in conjunction with the National Individual Asbestos Certification Scheme (NIACS), will provide asbestos inspectors with terms and conditions, a protocol for carrying out inspections and a dedicated PI policy wording for inspection work.

A RICS spokesman said: "There will be an accreditation scheme, which will equip surveyors with the necessary qualifications, as well as PI cover, to carry out inspections."

RICS/NIACS is developing the scheme in conjunction with Lloyd's broker Howden.

RICS said no date had yet been finalised for the launch of the scheme.
