British insurers are set to hold emergency meetings to discuss the possibility of being forced to cover terrorism risks in the U.S.

Emergency meetings are being held following the passing of US terrorism legislation.

The bill was introduced because building projects were being stalled as insurers were writing terrorist exclusion clauses into their policies.

Under the legislation insurers have to provide a cover for commercial damage and interruption following terrorist attacks.

Previously, many insurers were planning to continue refusing terrorism cover in next year's policies. Now insurers will have to provide an up-to-date quote within 90 days.

LLoyd's is said to be looking into ways of dealing with the situation.

The International Underwriting Association (IUA) also said its members are currently treating the bill with urgency.
