Budget Financial is consolidating its commercial operation by transferring business from its Pratts Insurance Office in Hillingdon, greater London, to Stamford, near its Peterborough base.

The company took over Pratts as part of its acquisition of fellow intermediary Dial Direct in October.

Five commercial staff are at risk of redundancy as a result of the move, it said. There are 12 staff working on commercial business at Stamford.

The company has begun a 30-day staff consultation about the transfer's implications.

The Hillingdon office will remain open to deal with personal lines business. The consolidation is aimed at helping the company hit its target of £25m turnover for commercial business in the next five years.

Budget's commercial arm, under commercial director Andrew Bentley, would offer more products, greater technical expertise and better service as well as being more efficient, the company said.

Chief executive Peter Winslow said: "We see our commercial operation as a very important part of our future plans for growth.

"We believe that this move is good news for our business, good news for our customers and good news for our insurers."

Budget employed about 1,200 people before it took on nearly 700 from Dial Direct, which also brought about 275,000 policies.
