Manchester Airport and Enterprise Rent-A-Car claim to have created the UK's first commercially-run Employee Car Club scheme.

The partnership which was developed with Manchester's 'Green Commuter Plan', aims to reduce traffic congestion around the airport. It has taken 12 months' planning.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car general manager Gary Palmer said: "This is a pioneering project for our company as well as for Manchester Airport.

"Car club schemes are not widely established in the UK and Enterprise is pleased to be involved," he added.

The new scheme encourages employees to car share or use public transport to travel to work and then hire a car during the day if they need one.

Manchester Airport and Enterprise have negotiated cheaper car hire rates.

Currently, 76% of the airport's 17,000 staff drive their own cars to work. By 2005, the two companies hope to reduce this to around 70%.
