John Charman speaks to the Telegraph about his ongoing divorce battle...

John Charman has given his first interview about his ongoing divorce battle. Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Charman, Axis Capital president and chief executive, spoke of his refusal to accept that the £48m settlement awarded to his ex-wife in July 2006 was fair.

Charman, who originally offered to pay Beverley Charman £20m, described the £48m award decision as “fundamentally flawed”, adding that it failed to “have proper regard for the contribution I made by being the only one to create the wealth”. Charman described his wife's contribution as “minimal”.

Due to return to court on 7 March to appeal the settlement, Charman told the newspaper's legal editor Joshua Rozenberg: “The law has an obligation to find a fair pathway for divorces to proceed quickly and fairly.”

However, he believed that the legal system in relation to divorce proceedings had been “hijacked” by the legal profession, “who reap huge financial benefits from the legal confusion and paralysis they sow in family law.”
