US-based insurer CNA has appointed Paul Hennessy as its chief underwriting officer for Europe. Hennessy is currently the chief underwriting officer of CNA's global operations and will retain that role.

CNA said the move demonstrated CNA's commitment to Europe and the importance of the European Union in the worldwide insurance marketplace.

It added that it considered Europe to be a core center of growth and that Hennessy's leadership in the local market would be instrumental in supporting its stated strategy of becoming a global insurer.

Hennessy has relocated from CNA's head office in Chicago, to CNA's European head office in London.

Hennessy became CNA's global chief underwriting officer in 1997 and has been responsible for setting underwriting philosophy and governance for all of CNA's operations outside of the US.

This includes Canada, Europe, Argentina, Asia-Pacific, FICOH in Hawaii and the foreign needs of US clients. He is already a director of CIE and will join the board of CNA Maritime.

He has over 30 years industry experience in underwriting both in Europe and the US, having spent 25 years with Chubb before joining CNA.
