Accident Exchange chief executive Steve Evans blasts ABI for trying to put onus on credit hire organisations

Accident Exchange chief executive Steve Evans today accused the ABI of trying to put the onus on credit hire organisations in its response to today’s damning Office of Fair Trading verdict.

Evans said the ABI statement, in response to the OFT probe into private motor insurance, suggests it is the credit hire and credit repair markets which are at the centre of the probe and therefore to blame.

Evans claims that, in fact, credit hire organisations are not at the centre of the probe, and it is insurers which are under the spotlight.

Evans said in email to Director General of Insurance Nick Starling: “The OFT has not referred anything to the Competition Commission for investigation at this stage and has certainly not highlighted the credit repair and credit hire markets as a single issue of what they assess as a dysfunctional market.

“In fact, their memo is clear in that it is only a provisional decision and it is the private motor insurance market under the spotlight (that’s the bit involving your members).”

The ABI was unavailable for comment.
