Angry ex-Independent Insurance staff will meet in Manchester tonight (September 18), to discuss the “misinformation” they claim they have received from liquidators PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).
The group's organiser Phil Angus, who was a commercial underwriter with Independent, said he was expecting up to 75 ex-Independent staff, mainly from the Cheadle office, to attend the meeting at 6.15pm tonight.
The group wrote to liquidator Mark Batten on September 16 to question the status of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) statutory redundancy pay due to staff made redundant.
Angus said redundant staff were given forms to claim the payment before they left the building on June 29, told to fill them out and return them to PwC, which would forward them to the DTI.
However, Angus said no staff had received any payments.
“We were made false promises and shooed out the door,” he said.
Angus organised the meeting because ex-staff were becoming increasingly angry about their treatment.
“There's uproar, to be honest, and unless something is done, it was going to get out of hand,” he said.
Angus said staff also had not received their payment in lieu of notice.
They are not eligible for the statutory payment from the DTI because the government department does not recognise provisional liquidation, only liquidation.
However, PwC has promised to cover the statutory section of the payment in lieu of notice.
