There were fears of explosions after fire ripped through a builder's yard where gas cylinders were reported to be stored this afternoon.

Fire fighters were investigating concerns that propane gas was stored at the blazing Tower Asphalt site in Raine Street, Wapping.

The fire started shortly before 2.45pm and the 62,500 square metre site was soon engulfed in flame.

A spokeswoman for London Fire Brigade said: "It is 100% alight and there are reports of propane gas cylinders there."

Eight fire pumps were in attendance by 3.15pm.

It is not yet known what caused the fire.
