New Council of Lloyd's member David Shipley is "not afraid to upset the Lloyd's establishment" according to sources.

Shipley, an underwriter with Managing Agency Partners, was elected to the Lloyd's council last week along with John Coldman, who was re-elected.

"Shipley is very independent and he's prepared to say what he thinks," said one underwriter.

"His own business is fairly unique in that, when he entered the market, as well as asking for corporate backing, he also went to the Names for backing at a time when Lloyd's was advising against it. He's prepared to buck the trend and he may rub the Lloyd's establishment up the wrong way from time to time."

The council election also saw Peter Morgan, representing AJSLP9 Ltd, elected as an external member.

Meanwhile, Hiscox director Robert Childs has been appointed chairman of the Lloyd's Market Association.

He replaces Stephen Catlin who was recently appointed to the Lloyd's franchise board.
