Groupama 3, the €10m French maxi trimaran attempting to sail round the world, came to a sudden halt on Monday morning around 80 miles off Dunedin, New Zealand, when, in nautical terms, its windward float sheared off and the vessel capsized,

Its French crew, including skipper Franck Cammas, were 24 days into the Jules Verne Trophy race when disaster struck. All were unharmed after gathering in the hull. Cammas spoke of waves up to seven metres high and a 30-knot wind. “The sea is breaking and nobody can go outside,” he explained. There must an insurance-related angle in there somewhere.
