Lawyer Reynolds Porter Chamberlain is predicting a massive increase in the National Health Service's £2.8 billion legal bill if the Court of Appeal increases personal injury damages next month.

The court is due to hear four test cases involving medical negligence which could tip the balance in favour of higher claims awards being proposed by the Law Commission.

The legal reform body is recommending damages should be increased by up to 100% for personal injury claims worth more than £3,000.

According to MPs, there are more than 15,000 claims against the NHS in the pipeline.
