Claimant lawyers have slammed government plans to change the small claims court limit.
The Motor Accident Solicitors' Society's Tim Gorman defended the role of lawyers: “It's clear that many claimants are totally bewildered by the hurdles in the claims process and struggle with the need for insurance companies to test claims to satisfy themselves that a claim is genuine. Solicitors understand the process in a way most consumers will not and are able to address the issues raised by insurers.”
Accident victims have also come out against the government's compensation proposals, with 25,000 signing a petition to Downing Street.
Gorman added: “The public needs independent representation to ensure fair outcomes when dealing with insurers paid for representing motor vehicle users. Any removal of effective professional representation, whether through changes in the claims process or the raising of the current small claims limit, runs contrary to what is in the best interests of the public and what the public have told us they want to see.”
