Liberty International Underwriters (LIU), a division of global insurer Liberty Mutual Group, has appointed Shazia Aslam Rafique as Assistant Vice President for Marine, Energy and Construction in its Dubai office to further its expansion in the Middle East region.

Mrs Aslam Rafique has been with LIU in London since August 2003, when she started as an underwriter responsible for assisting in the growth and management of the Oil, Gas, Petrochemicals and Chemicals (OGPC) division. She will move to LIU’s Dubai office to take up her new post in early 2008.

Reporting to LIU’s Middle East Regional Manager Elie Bouchaaya, Mrs Aslam Rafique will be responsible for the development of the Oil and Gas product line as well as the profitable growth of the Marine, Energy and Construction business in the region.

Commenting on this appointment, LIU’s CEO Sean Rocks said: “Shazia’s move to Dubai is an important part of our growth plans for Liberty in the Middle East. Since our launch in Dubai last year, we are becoming a real force in the region having increased our specialty product offering to include underwriting expertise in Directors & Officers, Financial Institutions, Professional Indemnity and Casualty/General Liability.”

Michael Gosselin, Senior Vice President for Marine, Energy and Construction at LIU in London, added: “As the Dubai insurance market matures and takes an ever increasing role in global markets, Shazia will be able to provide the technical underwriting expertise necessary for complex risks so that we can assist our energy clients and brokers in the region with practical risk solutions.”

Mrs Aslam Rafique is a graduate in economics and law from Brunel University and has over ten years’ experience in both the Lloyd’s and Company markets.

LIU’s Dubai operation was launched in November 2006 and trades from the Dubai International Financial Centre.
