Mark Warrilow has 27 years experience working in a variety of disciplines within the insurance industry

He now leads Markel's crime book of business, underwriting financial institutions, global bankers blanket bond, commercial crime business and armour car business in Europe.

Warrilow's CV shows experience in multiple disciplines from claims to broking to underwriting. In 1979, he began as a claims broker.

He joined BRS in 1980 as a technician in the claims department and moved to broking London market excess of loss claims. During his final years at BRS, Warrilow was charged with broking general insurance direct and facultative insurance business.

He joined Markel International (then Octavian Managing Agencies) in 1983, working for its reinsurance syndicate. He was responsible for inwards and outwards claims and aggregate monitoring. He progressed to the underwriting side in the late 80s and early 90s, with its hurricanes, earthquakes and storms.

Following a short period at Ace in 1997, Warrilow was given the opportunity to start a crime book of business for Markel International.

Warrilow believes there is little difference between the skills needed to be an underwriter or a broker.

Warrilow says: "To succeed in underwriting I believe you need to be a bit of a broker and likewise to succeed in broking you need to be a bit of an underwriter."

Warrilow says: "While qualifications have become and are very important, I feel not enough emphasis is placed on experience, which is only gained through years of working in the industry."
