The "significant majority" of primary intermediaries managed to get their authorisation applications to the FSA before the guaranteed authorisation deadline of 13 July, according to IMAS Corporate Advisors.

The FSA said it had received 8,624 applications for authorisation from the general insurance market ahead of the deadline.

Of these, 4,843 came from primary intermediaries and 3,781 from secondary intermediaries.

These figures mean that 4,086 general insurance and mortgage firms who registered for application packs did not submit completed forms to the FSA before the cut-off date.

IMAS director James Simpson said there would be several hundred insurance intermediaries who needed to gain authorisation who had not yet applied.

But he said that looking at the FSA's figures the vast majority of firms had already submitted their applications.

The FSA also said it had sent out 2,715 'minded to authorise' letters to primary insurance intermediaries, and 1,096 to secondary intermediaries by 13 July.

FSA high street firms division director Sarah Wilson urged those firms who had not yet submitted their applications to do so as quickly as possible.

She said it was possible that late applications would not be processed in time for the January 14 2005 deadline.
