The FSA has received 13,282 registrations for an application pack and 9,191 applications for general insurance intermediation authorisation.

The FSA said 6,407 registrations were from the primary insurance market and 6,875 from the secondary insurance market. With regard to applications for authorisation, the estimated breakdown was 5,044 from the primary insurance market and 4,147 from the secondary insurance market.

Also, by the end of 3 September, 9,614 letters had been sent to applicant firms indicating that the FSA had "minded to authorise" (MTA) them to carry out mortgage or general insurance business. Of these the sectoral split was mortgage 3,375, primary insurance 3,394, and secondary insurance 2,845.

Additionally, by end 3 September, 4,150 applications had been received for a variation of permission from already FSA-supervised firms who wished to conduct mortgage or general insurance business in addition to their current regulated activities.

Of these, 2,906 were for mortgage (or mortgage and GI permissions) and 1,244 for general insurance only and 2,750 "variation of permission" (VOP) letters had been sent by this date: 2,088 in respect of mortgages (or mixed business) and 662 in respect of general insurance.

MTA letters have been issued to 79 firms wishing to operate a network with a mortgage or general insurance permission. Included among those receiving VOP letters are 46 networks making a total of 125 networks in all - 79 relating to mortgage business (or mixed business) and 46 to general insurance.
