Antares chief executive Michael van der Straaten has passed away following a short illness.

der Straaten had more than 40 years’ experience in the industry, starting out his career as an assistant underwriter.
He went onto hold jobs in both London and Cologne for a range of firms, including Europa Re, Canopius Group and Chubb.
der Straaten later became chief executive for Qatar Insurance Company’s European reinsurance arm, leading its transformation into Antares. He became chief executive at Antares in 2020.
Statement
In a statement confirming his passing, Antares said: ”It is with great sadness that we announce that Michael van der Straaten, chief executive of Antares, passed away unexpectedly this weekend following a short illness.
”Antares and QIC’s thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences are with Mike’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
”A further statement will be released in due course.”

His career began in 2019, when he joined a local north London newspaper after graduating from the University of Sheffield with a first-class honours degree in journalism.
He took up the position of deputy news editor at Insurance Times in March 2023, before being promoted to his current role in May 2024.View full Profile
