’By extending AI summarisation to income protection, we’re continuing our commitment to making protection insurance faster, simpler and more accessible,’ says chief underwriting officer
Aviva is expanding its artificial intelligence (AI) underwriting summarisation tool to support individual income protection applications.

The rollout means most individual protection applications where a medical report is required can now be summarised, spanning life insurance, critical illness and income protection cover.
The tool uses generative AI to analyse medical reports which transforms lengthy and complex documents into concise summaries containing the key information underwriters need to review.
Robert Morrison, chief underwriting officer at Aviva, said: “By extending AI summarisation to income protection, we’re continuing our commitment to making protection insurance faster, simpler and more accessible, while ensuring more customers can get the cover they need as quickly as possible.”
Tool rollout
The AI tool was first used for individual life insurance applications in November 2025 and was adapted for critical illness applications in March 2026.

The latest move completes the rollout of the AI technology across its individual protection product range.
Morrison said: “We’ve already seen the positive impact this technology can have for life insurance and critical illness applications, helping our underwriters review medical evidence more efficiently and improving the experience for advisers and customers.”

She joined the title after completing a Master's degree in Journalism in 2025, having previously graduated with a degree in English Literature.View full Profile
