The insurtech has grown its headcount after benefiting from post-pandemic consumer demand for pay-per-mile motor cover

Insurtech By Miles has appointed a plethora of senior hires in support of its growth trajectory, as the business continues to take advantage of consumer appetite for pay-per-mile motor insurance following the Covid-19 pandemic.

This includes appointing a new chief people officer, chief commercial officer, chief product and technology officer, as well as a vice-president of marketing.

The insurtech has so far expanded its headcount from 25 staff in March 2020 to now stand at 80 employees.

James Blackham, By Miles’ chief executive and founder, said: “We’re so pleased to be able to welcome a high calibre of people to By Miles, to help us achieve our mission of making driving fairer.

“Our amazing growth over the past couple of years demonstrates that By Miles is resonating with drivers, so now it’s great to see that we’re making waves in the industry too and bringing on board such talented people.

“2022 is set to be a huge year for us.”

By Miles now counts ex-Aviva, LV=, Direct Line Group, Ageas and Admiral employees among its ranks.

Putting people first

Former neuroscientist Asha Singh has joined By Miles as its new chief people officer. Singh has a decade of experience in scaling startups, such as Oracle Maxymiser, Poq, Localz and Moixa.

Upon starting in the new role, Singh will be working with the team to establish the company’s virtues and fundamental people practices, as well as champion inclusion and compassionate leadership.

Singh said: “As a scaleup in the insurance space, it’s been amazing to build a company and culture that is completely unlike the rest of the industry.

“We unapologetically put our people and virtues first and it’s brilliant to see talented, wonderful people wanting to join our story.

”By Miles is tearing up the rule book when it comes to insurance, but also in regard to the employee experience. The world is changing rapidly and we have big ambitions about how we are going to meet that challenge.

“We’ve had some huge success in the past couple of years and we’re not done yet.”

Meanwhile Maddy Howlett has been appointed as the insurtech’s new chief commercial officer. In this position, she will be responsible for ensuring By Miles maintains rapid growth into 2022 and beyond. She previously spent 18 years at energy provider Centrica, in variety of roles across British Gas.

Todd Zino will become chief product and technology officer, following a 10-year stint leading fintech and price comparison ventures.

He will be responsible for building By Miles’ products, data, insurance and technology capability as the insurtech grows.

Most recently, Zino ran products and technology for mortgage broker Trussle. Prior to this, he spearheaded platform and product launches for Uswitch, Bankrate and The Points Guy. In 2012, Zino co-founded Wallaby Financial – a digital wallet company.

Lastly, Ed Naish will become vice-president of marketing. He previously led marketing for the Churchill and Privilege brands at Direct Line Group.

Naish will focus on developing marketing and installing By Miles as a category leader and household name. He joins from Ovo Energy, where he was marketing director for SSE and CORGI.
