Paul O’Brien, chief AI officer at Davies, explains his firm’s entry to the Excellence in AI – Service Provider category

1. Why did you put yourselves forward for the category?

We entered because we believe excellence in AI should be measured by the difference it makes, not simply the sophistication of the technology.

Paul O’Brien, chief AI officer at Davies

At Davies, we are applying AI to real insurance challenges, helping claims move faster and more consistently while retaining human judgement where it matters.

Our approach combines practical innovation with governance and accountability throughout the AI lifecycle.

We wanted to showcase how those elements work together and demonstrate that responsible AI is not a barrier to progress, but a foundation for delivering better outcomes for clients and customers.

2. What do you think makes your entry stand out and why should you win the award?

What makes our entry stand out is the combination of measurable impact and governance embedded into delivery.

Through ClaimPilot, we are applying AI across the claims lifecycle, reducing manual processing and helping specialists access important information earlier.

Our approach maintains human oversight for high-impact decisions, with traceability and clear escalation routes.

We believe we should win because we are demonstrating more than successful automation – we are showing how AI can operate responsibly in insurance, delivering efficiency and consistency while preserving the judgement, accountability and customer trust that the industry depends on.

3. What would winning this award mean to you and your firm?

For me, winning would recognise a principle that underpins our approach – AI delivers its greatest value when innovation is matched by accountability and good customer outcomes.

For Davies, it would be a proud moment for the colleagues bringing that ambition to life and an endorsement of our commitment to responsible transformation.

It would give us further encouragement to scale our approach, share our learning and keep raising the standard.

Above all, we would see it not as a finishing line, but as motivation to continue turning AI’s potential into meaningful, trusted outcomes.
