Asbestos management specialists OHS said business esconcerned about new asbestos legislation have a simple route to compliance.

OHS said it has developed a straight-forward, seven-step process for companies to follow in order to become compliant with the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations due to come into effect on 21 May 2004.

OHS asbestos group manager Phillip McGregor-Cheers said: “Make no mistake, asbestos in the workplace should be taken very seriously indeed. It is the root cause of a number of horrific industrial diseases, more people die per year from asbestos-related diseases than from road accidents, so this new legislation is both welcome and necessary.

“However, many companies in the health & safety industry make the process of compliance complex, timely and expensive. They benefit from a culture of fear generated by new legislation and the threat of law suits.

“We believe that the more mature, intelligent organisations will not be scared into managing their asbestos. They will choose to do it because they want to protect their workforce, their business and their reputation.”

The regulations impose a duty on property owners and landlords to manage asbestos in non-domestic premises, requiring reasonable steps to be taken to determine where asbestos-related material may have been used.
