In a major crack down on accident causing drivers, Sussex police are to pass on the details of any company-owned vehicle involved in a motoring offence to employers.

The initiative is designed not only to cut the number of accidents but also the number of insurance claims.

Company cars, lorries and vans are involved in 90% of serious road accidents, according to independent research. Up to one third of speeding vehicles are company owned while 65% of company car drivers will have an accident in their first 12 months.

"Cutting down on unnecessary accidents not only helps to keep insurance claims and premiums down but makes the roads safer for all of us," said Zurich Financial Services spokesman, Brian Smith. Zurich has more than 14,000 fleet vehicle policyholders.

He said Zurich would lead by example, disciplining any Zurich staff member driving a company car who commits more than two driving offences in any one year.

Under the Sussex initiative, employers will be contacted by letter, outlining the details of the driving offence and registration number of the vehicle implicated.
