QBE, one of Australia's largest insurers, has solved its internal information distribution problems with an intranet - and is saving money in the process.

Running with Lotus Domino and ISYS:web, QBE says its intranet has already achieved "significant cost savings" and now is proving to be very popular with the staff.

The company says it started with the development of the Insurance System/2 (IS/2) program, QBE's in-house application. Once the system was in place, a paper-based user manual for every employee was required which would have cost the company $80,000 for each new product release.

In its first year, IS/2 manual has had three versions, so the manual cost would already stand at $240,000.

Instead, for a tenth of this, QBE has now established an intranet, which distributes the IS/2 manual and other information throughout Australia and various offices around the world.

There are plans in progress to eventually give all of QBE's offices worldwide access to the intranet.

There are also plans to expand the content and uses of the site - ultimately the company is hoping to provide interactive training online.
