Royal & SunAlliance (R&SA) will be hiring new staff to improve its sales and marketing skills in the UK commercial division.

R&SA's commercial division is also planning a "prominent communication" to brokers later in 2004 to explain its strategy going forward.

New UK commercial director Brendan McManus said that after a period of uncertainty about the group's future, he wanted to explain to brokers the differences between its commercial business and its rivals.

He also planned to explain the areas the company wanted to focus on for growth.

"We have to improve our marketing and sales capability in the same way that we've really ramped up our underwriting and claims capability over the last two or three years," McManus said.

"People will see probably quite a different team in Royal & SunAlliance commercial from what they've seen in the past. Some of that will be internal, some external."

He said the company was expecting to begin making new appointments in the "next month or so".
