RSA has appointed Richard Houghton as its group chief financial officer.

Houghton has joined from Aspen Insurance where he held the same role.

He previously worked at Royal Bank of Scotland Group as chief operating officer and group finance director for RBS Insurance.

He will start the role in June, replacing George Culmer, who is leaving RSA after its AGM in May.

RSA group chief executive Simon Lee said: “Richard has a proven track record as a group chief financial officer, combining extensive knowledge of the insurance industry, solid technical expertise and an externally focused approach. With his broad experience in banking, insurance and reinsurance, I look forward to him bringing fresh strategic perspectives to the business.”

He added: “I would also like to thank George for his very significant contribution to the group over a number of years and wish him well at Lloyds.”

Houghton, who will cease to be a director at Aspen on 29 February, said: “I am excited to be joining RSA, a business with a truly global presence and significant market opportunities. I look forward to working with Simon, the board and the executive team, to continue to drive the business forward.”

RSA this morning reported its annual results for 2011.
