Sun Microsystems is distributing – free – Star 5.1, a new "office productivity" package that enables users to complete a number of computer-based tasks.
All users have to do to get the product is visit the web site www.sun.com and download.
Alternatively, the package can be ordered in CD form, at a cost of $9.95 (£6) (plus shipping and handling).
Star Office 5.1 includes Office Writer for word processing; Calc for creating spreadsheets; Impress for presentations; Draw and Image for creating graphics; Schedule for calendars and to do lists; Mail for handling e-mail; Base for access to databases; Discussion for reading internet news; and Math for devising complex formulas.
