Volvo has become the first car manufacturer to fit vehicles with a new generation of laminated glass, that strengthens their resistance to attack.

As car crime rises to more than two million thefts each year, there is an increased need for better security.

Laminated glass is fitted by a number of car firms including Peugeot, Audi and Mercedes.

But enhanced protective glass (EPG), which is extremely difficult to smash, is the newest line of defence to be fitted to the sides of Volvo V70 and S80 models.

Paul Walder, Volvo Car UK's new product manager, said: "There is no room for complacency. Volvo prides itself on leading the car industry when it comes to both safety and security innovations."
