Public sector insurer Zurich Municipal has launched a campaign to raise awareness of the danger of arson in schools, which it claims costs £83m a year.

According to Zurich, three schools are subject to arson attacks every day, and the related cost of fires in schools has risen by 13% since last year.

The Arson Combated Together (ACT) fire service tool kit is designed to educate pupils and teachers and will be provided to UK fire services free of charge, the company said.

Larry Stokes, underwriting manager at Zurich Municipal and chair of the Arson Prevention Bureau's Schools Working Group, said: “School arson is a complex, serious crime with widespread effects. This new tool kit will assist fire services and schools in encouraging pupils to think about the many implications of arson.”

Zurich said a pilot of the scheme demonstrated heightened awareness of the risks of arson amongst students which led to a marked significant decrease in property losses from schools.
