Zurich Financial Services (ZFS) is turning to CSC's litigation software to cut its legal costs. Zurich spends £1.4bn on claims costs each year, and a significant proportion of that is spent on lawyers.

The group is using CSC's business processor to outsource bill review services. ZFS hopes the software will help it reduce costs and increase efficiency, while at the same time strengthening business relationships with its panel of external law firms.

ZFS joins a growing line of general insurers who are looking at ways of curbing spiralling claims costs.

ZFS UK managing director group claims Roger Day said: "We spend £1.4bn a year on claims in the UK, and a significant proportion of that is spent on our own lawyers. What we want is to ensure we minimise the amount of time we use lawyers and, when we do use them, they need to be effective - spending time on the right things to bring each case to a swift and satisfactory conclusion.

CSC's Legalgard Services managing director Gary Markham said: "As well as reducing leakage, users can also identify high performing firms and individuals. This allows claims work to be directed to those most capable of dealing with it."
